Scheme 2

Playing off the idea of graffiti as a "connective" urban language, I envisioned a sort of ribbon flowing through the site and generating space for program, all the while becoming a form of open public representation by allowing it to be one extensive blank canvas for expression. Then, through the use of diferent materials for different program, creating an outdoor park in which to cut through to the bus stop and corner store, allowing the user to experience and engage the site while still not diverting them from their end destination.

Scheme 1

Playing off the park idea, I decided to treat the entire site as a sort of fabric, able to be molded and pulled up to accommodate program, thus generating a flowing landscape and preserving the integrity of the park. By using the main pedestrian traffic routes, I was able to determine where to locate the various elements, and therefore creating an inviting site as both a destination in itself as well as a shortcut to the bus stop.

First Site Analysis

The idea for our first site trip was to pinpoint particular urban qualities of the area, and anything of immediate importance. It was readily apparent, both from seeing the site and from previous experiences and understandings of urban life, the the corner was critical. Not only does the corner symbolize certain social phenomena, it provides a node for public transit, and the typical location for convenience stores. On a more subconscious note, I recognized the significant presence of urban art: graffiti. But not only in the typical gang signs and such, but also in the form of murals and representations of live in the area.

In addition, the sites on either side of ours, both social housing, contain a certain amount of green and park space, with large trees and meandering walkways. From this, I see a certain possibility of integrating such space into our site.
